Telemarketing Calls — Your Rights in the UK
Telemarketing — live or recorded sales calls — is regulated in the UK by the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) and enforced by the ICO. Companies must respect the Telephone Preference Service and obtain prior consent before automated marketing calls.
Common signs
- A live agent offering a "free quote" or "no-obligation review".
- Requests to confirm your address or date of birth before they will explain why they are calling.
- Withheld or "International" caller-ID with an English-language sales pitch.
Typical scripts
- ""We have an exclusive solar-panel grant available in your area...""
- ""Our records show your boiler insurance is due for renewal...""
What to do
- Register with the TPS — it is free and legally binding on UK callers.
- Ask the caller for their company name and trading address; they must provide both.
- Report repeat unsolicited calls to the ICO.
